O RLY?

YA RLY! NO WAI!

O HAI! This is some of the random ramblings of Jiayong Ou, a generic geek and web developer. Most of his ramblings are on twitter as @jiayongou. More on his other online activities are on his other page. His old blog is still available if anybody cares.

I think there’s a perception problem with this whole marriage debate. Everybody sees the institution of marriage through their own lens, so they’re not even debating the same thing.

People against gay marriage think it’s about preserving marriage, and that marriage is about reproduction, and clearly gaylords can’t reproduce duh so they shouldn’t be allowed to marry.

Meanwhile the rest of us are fucking ourselves silly reproducing out of wedlock, or reproducing in wedlock and then breaking that wedlock, and have come to the conclusion that marriage has nothing to do with reproduction, that there’s certainly nothing god-blessed or sacred about it when half of them end in divorce, and thus marriage really only boils down to one thing: the public affirmation and legal recognition of one person’s love for another.

I think any two consenting, mentally sound, and responsible adult human beings should be able to marry.

See all those secret code-words? Obviously “adult” would change the game, since most places allow marriage below legal age with parental or judicial consent. I say fuck parental and judicial consent; if you’re not an adult, you’re not getting married. Obviously that part where I mention “mentally sound” would require a great number of people to undergo years of therapy before they’re allowed to marry. But “responsible” is a trick: there’d be some kind of test of cohabitation, shared responsibility (mortgage, pets, children), and shared finance.

Half the people who walk down the aisle today probably wouldn’t pass that test. That’s preserving marriage, fuckers.

Same sex marriage is a violation of God’s laws.

We probably both live in a constitutional state (I sure do) and I don’t see myself under jurisdiction of God’s law. I don’t mind you following it but you can’t assume that everybody else does.

Its not about two people consenting or following the desires of their heart its about doing what is right.

“What is right” is subjective. I do consider “following the desires of the heart” “right” in most cases.

The earth is the lord’s and the fullness thereof. The world and all its people belong to him.

I prefer to have a free will, thank you.

I will shut up now.

Ditto.
